About OCR GCSE Chemistry

OCR offers two GCSE Chemistry specifications: J258 Twenty First Century Chemistry and J248 Gateway Chemistry. Both are 9-1 graded with Foundation and Higher tiers, assessed via two 1-hour-45-minute papers each worth 90 marks. J248 Gateway covers: particles, elements compounds and mixtures, chemical reactions, predicting and identifying reactions and products, monitoring and controlling chemical reactions, and global challenges. J258 Twenty First Century is structured around big ideas: air and water, chemical patterns, chemicals of the natural environment, materials, and chemical analysis. Eight required practicals are integral to both specifications and are heavily examined.

How to Use OCR GCSE Chemistry Past Papers Effectively

For Higher tier OCR Chemistry, mole calculations distinguish 7-9 grades from 4-6. Memorise: moles = mass ÷ Mr (molecular mass); concentration = moles ÷ volume (in dm³, NOT cm³); volume of gas at room temperature and pressure = moles × 24 dm³. Drill unit conversions: 1000 cm³ = 1 dm³ = 1 litre. Reaction equation balancing is heavily examined. Practise balancing 20 equations weekly, including organic combustion, displacement, neutralisation, and electrolysis equations. In ionic equations, both atoms AND charge must balance. For required practicals, the most-tested are Rates of Reaction (using disappearing-cross or volume-of-gas), Titration (with end-point identification by indicator change), and Electrolysis. For each, know exactly: which variable is independent, which dependent, what is controlled, and what graph type is appropriate. For 6-mark questions, OCR's mark scheme rewards a structured response that links observation to chemical principle. Don't just say ‘the reaction is faster’ — say ‘more particles have energy greater than the activation energy, so the rate of effective collisions per second increases’.
