About OCR GCSE Biology

OCR offers two GCSE Biology specifications: J257 Twenty First Century Biology and J247 Gateway Biology. Both are 9-1 graded, both Foundation and Higher tier, and both follow the structure of two 1-hour-45-minute exam papers worth 90 marks each. J247 Gateway is the more widely taken specification, organised by topic: cells, scaling up, organism-level systems, community-level systems, genes inheritance and selection, and global challenges. J257 Twenty First Century is organised around big ideas in biology and is more strongly focused on social and ethical implications of biological science (genome editing, conservation, antibiotic resistance). Both specifications include eight required practicals which examiners draw on for ~15% of marks. There is no coursework or controlled assessment; performance is based entirely on the two written exams.

How to Use OCR GCSE Biology Past Papers Effectively

OCR Gateway Biology examiner reports consistently flag three weaknesses: confusion between mitosis and meiosis, weak quantitative skills (especially magnification and percentage change calculations), and vague answers to 'explain' questions in the ecology unit. For required practicals, write a one-page summary per practical covering aim, variables, equipment, hazards, method, and expected results. Eight required practicals × one page = one revision pack. Test yourself by closing the page and reproducing the method. For magnification, learn the triangle: image size = magnification × actual size. Always check units (typically mm in the question, µm in the answer; remember 1 mm = 1000 µm). For 6-mark extended-response questions, OCR uses a four-band mark scheme. Reach Band 4 by chaining cause-effect-consequence and using two pieces of subject-specific terminology per paragraph. Examiner reports show that students who write more do not score more — conciseness with the right terms beats length. Differentiate between OCR Gateway and OCR Twenty First Century specs in your revision — each has different recommended exemplars and slightly different lists of required practicals.
