About AQA GCSE Religious Studies A

AQA GCSE Religious Studies A (specification 8062) is the more widely-taken of AQA's two RS specifications. Students study two religions (typically Christianity and Islam, but six other choices are permitted) plus four philosophical and ethical themes. Assessment is two 1-hour-45-minute papers, each worth 96 marks. Paper 1 (The Study of Religions) examines the beliefs and practices of the two chosen religions. For Christianity this includes the Trinity, incarnation, salvation, sacraments, the church year, prayer, and pilgrimage. For Islam, this includes the Six Beliefs of Sunni Islam plus the Five Roots of Shia Usul ad-Din, the five pillars, and key Muslim festivals. Paper 2 (Thematic Studies) covers four philosophical themes from a list of six: typically Religion and Life (origins of the universe, animal rights, abortion, euthanasia), Religion Peace and Conflict (just war theory, pacifism, terrorism), Religion Crime and Punishment, and Religion Human Rights and Social Justice. There are no compulsory texts but candidates must reference scripture or religious sources for top marks.

How to Use AQA GCSE Religious Studies A Past Papers Effectively

Mark schemes for AQA RS A reward two distinct skills: accurate religious knowledge (AO1) and evaluation (AO2). The 12-mark extended evaluation questions split 6 marks for AO1 (knowledge) and 6 for AO2 (evaluation), but the two are graded together using levels. For 12-mark questions, use the PEEL structure but extend it: Point, Evidence (including a scripture quote or named teaching), Explanation, Link to alternative view, Counter-link, Conclusion with judgement. Examiner reports state that the most common B/C-grade mistake is to give one-sided arguments without acknowledging counter-positions. Memorise twelve scripture or hadith quotations: four on God's nature, four on ethics, four on the afterlife. Learn each in the source's language flavour (Bible cite by book chapter verse; Qur'an cite by surah:ayah; hadith cite the collection — Bukhari, Muslim). Quoting sources accurately moves an answer from Level 3 to Level 4. For Paper 2, use the consequentialist/deontological/virtue-ethics framework as a backbone for arguing ethical issues. A candidate who can write 'A consequentialist would argue … whereas a virtue ethicist would respond …' demonstrates the analytical skill examiners reward.
