About AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy

AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy (specification 8464) is the double-award alternative to the three separate sciences. Students gain a single qualification reported as two grades (e.g., 9-9, 7-6, 5-4) on a 17-point scale from 1-1 to 9-9. Assessment consists of six 75-minute papers: two each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each paper is worth 70 marks for a total of 420. Both Foundation (1-1 to 5-5) and Higher (4-4 to 9-9) tiers are available. Content is similar to the separate sciences but covers approximately two-thirds of the material. Students cover 16 required practicals (compared to 24 in Triple Science) which examiners draw on for at least 15% of marks. There is no controlled assessment or coursework. The most common reason for choosing Trilogy over Triple Science is timetable space โ€” it earns two GCSEs from the equivalent of two science option blocks rather than three.

How to Use AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy Past Papers Effectively

Combined Science is a vocabulary-density exam. With six papers worth 70 marks each, every paper rewards precise terminology. Build three flashcard decks (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) with the AQA-specified key terms; review at least 30 cards per day in the final 12 weeks. For Higher tier, the 6-mark extended-response question on each paper is worth 8.5% of that paper's marks. The mark scheme uses three levels: Level 1 demonstrates basic recall, Level 2 shows understanding, Level 3 shows developed connections. Practise writing Level 3 responses by chaining cause to effect to consequence, not by giving more facts. Required practicals are heavily examined and predictable because the practicals themselves are fixed. For each of the 16 required practicals, write a half-page summary covering: aim, independent and dependent variables, how variables are controlled, equipment list, hazards, expected pattern in results, sources of error. Maths in physics and chemistry papers often distinguishes 6โ€“9 grades. Re-arranging equations, using standard form, and converting units (cmยณ โ†” dmยณ โ†” mยณ in chemistry; ยตJ โ†” mJ โ†” J in physics) appear on every series. Drill these mechanically. Use the AQA-published examiner reports for each paper โ€” they list, year by year, the specific mistakes most candidates made. Treat these as a checklist of pitfalls.
