International Mathematics for Years 7–9: Number, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Analysis

Pearson Edexcel International Lower Secondary Curriculum (ILSC) Mathematics (specification LMA11) is designed for international schools and learners in Years 7–9 (approximately ages 11–14) who are following the Edexcel international curriculum. It provides a rigorous and internationally benchmarked mathematics programme that prepares students for GCSE, iGCSE, or equivalent examination at 16. The specification covers four mathematical strands across the three-year lower secondary period. Number extends primary arithmetic into directed numbers (positive and negative integers), fractions, decimals, percentages, indices, standard form (scientific notation), and ratio and proportion. Students learn to estimate and check calculations, recognise irrational numbers, and apply number skills in financial and scientific contexts. Algebra introduces the language of generalisation: writing and evaluating algebraic expressions, simplifying by collecting like terms, expanding brackets, factorising simple expressions, solving one- and two-step linear equations, working with inequalities, plotting and interpreting straight-line graphs (y = mx + c), and introducing sequences (arithmetic and geometric). By Year 9, students are expected to form and solve equations from geometric and contextual situations. Geometry and Measures covers properties of 2D shapes (triangles, quadrilaterals, circles), angles in polygons and parallel lines, Pythagoras's theorem, transformations (translation, reflection, rotation, enlargement with scale factors), area and perimeter, volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders, and an introduction to trigonometry in right-angled triangles. Data and Statistics covers collecting, organising, and presenting data (frequency tables, bar charts, pie charts, scatter graphs), averages (mean, median, mode), range, probability (simple and combined), and interpreting statistical graphs critically. Assessment is through a single written paper (LMA11) which assesses the full breadth of the curriculum.

Algebraic Equation Solving, Pythagoras Applications, and Statistical Interpretation

For algebra questions on the ILSC paper, the most common source of errors is in expanding brackets and collecting like terms. Expanding 3(2x – 5) gives 6x – 15, not 6x – 5 — the multiplication applies to every term inside the bracket, including the negative sign. When solving equations with brackets, expand first, then collect terms, then isolate the variable. Write each step on a new line to reduce sign errors. For Pythagoras's theorem, identify the hypotenuse first — it is always the side opposite the right angle, and it is always the longest side. The formula is c² = a² + b², where c is the hypotenuse. If you need to find a shorter side rather than the hypotenuse, rearrange: a² = c² – b². Always check that your answer is less than the hypotenuse (shorter sides must be shorter than the hypotenuse). For statistics questions involving scatter graphs, practise drawing and interpreting lines of best fit. The line should pass through the mean point (the intersection of the mean x-value and mean y-value) and be positioned so that approximately equal numbers of plotted points are above and below it. When interpreting a scatter graph, use specific numbers from the axes: "as the temperature increases from 10°C to 20°C, ice cream sales increase from approximately 40 to 90 per day" is more precise and marks-worthy than "higher temperature means more sales".
