Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Human Biology (specification 4HB1, replacing legacy 4HB0) is a specialist qualification that focuses exclusively on the biology of the human body — nutrition, respiration, circulation, excretion, reproduction, the nervous system, and the immune response. It is distinct from standard iGCSE Biology, which covers the full range of biological topics including plant biology and ecology. The qualification consists of two externally examined papers with no coursework. Paper 1 (2 hours, 120 marks, 66.7%) covers the core human biology content in depth: cells and tissues, nutrition, the circulatory system, respiration, waste removal via the kidneys and lungs, nervous and endocrine coordination, reproductive processes, and patterns of inheritance. Paper 2 (1 hour, 60 marks, 33.3%) focuses on health, disease, and humanity’s ecological footprint, together with items that evaluate understanding of experimental methodology. With 206 resources, this archive is one of the largest for any iGCSE subject. System-by-System Mastery: A Targeted Approach to iGCSE Human Biology

Human Biology is best revised system by system. For each body system — circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, endocrine, reproductive — create a one-page summary covering: structure (key organs and their components), function (what each organ does), how the system responds to changes (homeostasis), and common diseases or disorders. This systematic approach prevents the common problem of revising depth in some topics while neglecting others. Diagram-based questions are frequent. Practise drawing and labelling the heart (including valves, chambers, and blood vessel connections), the nephron, the eye, the brain, and the female reproductive system. Each diagram should be accompanied by functional annotations — not just labels but brief explanations of what each part does. Many marks are lost because students label structures correctly but cannot explain their function. Paper 2's health and disease section often tests the ability to interpret epidemiological data — graphs showing disease incidence, tables comparing treatments, or statistics on risk factors. Describe the pattern first, then explain it using biological knowledge. If a graph shows that lung cancer rates are higher in smokers, do not just state this — explain the biological mechanism: tar in cigarette smoke contains carcinogens that cause mutations in bronchial epithelial cells, leading to uncontrolled cell division.
